The GT installation and commissioning project in Sunon-Asogli Tema (Ghana) Power Plant Undertaken by Nanguang Power was completed. The 2 sets of combined cycle units were handed over and put into commercial operation after a 72+24 hours of test run. A complete set of documents concerning the project both in China and at the installation site were turned over to the owner. On Nov. 2nd, 2010, the last batch of nanguang personnel returned to China.
Major tasks fulfilled by Nanguang Power in Ghana include: 4×6B embedded parts; 4×6B main frame and electrical equipments installation; 2×6B rotor reinstallation; 4×6B Speedtronic control panal replacement; 4×6B partial & general commissioning; 2 sets of combined cycle units 72+24 hours of test run.
Although we have anticipated the possible delay of the installation, it still made us very embarrassed facing the protracted, three-year-and-three-month-long project. Considering the large scale of the 4×6B GT project, Nanguang Power adopted a strategy of sending more teams with fewer hands, so as to partly avoid loss resulting from the possible delay. The weak industrial basis was a major reason of the delay. Fore instance, all equipments and materials had to be imported from China. Natural gas supply was severely constrained. Moreover, the progress of auxiliary project remained like marathon.
Domestic contractors, including designing institutes, and those concerning civil construction, gas turbine, steam turbine, seawater treatment, dam, cooling tower, natural gas pipeline, power grid, road and bridge construction, participated in Sunon Asogli Tema (Ghana) Power Plant project. Given the difficulty of building a power plant on the top of sand, the successful commercial operation of the first phase 2 sets of combined cycle units was indeed worthy of commendation and congratulations.
A significant meaning of the completion of Nanguang’s Ghanaian project and other overseas projects lies in the training of Nanguang personnel and establishment of a foundation for Nanguang to go global. Good fortune comes to those who work hard. Though we have left Ghana for the time being, we are bound to return to Africa, a land of huge potential and commercial opportunity.
